Colombia’s ‘Birdman’ dies in Switzerland

Professional skydiver, base jumper and wingsuit flyer Jhonathan Flórez died in a skydiving accident during training last week


Jhonathan Flórez, 32, affectionately known in Colombia as ‘El Hombre Pajaro’ (The Birdman) died in the town of Engelberg, Switzerland, on July 3, when his parachute failed to open.Rescue workers immediately rushed to the aid of the athlete, but could do nothing to save his life, reports said.

The two companions Flórez was with at the time managed to land safely.

‘The Birdman’ had been practicing the sport for ten years, and made more than 2,000 jumps in that time.

He had made jumps and wingsuit flights over the Corcovado in Brazil, the Nazca lines in Peru, and La Guajira in Colombia, where he broke four world records by jumping from a height of 11,358 metres.
